Biodiversity in Dairy Farming

Biodiversity plays a crucial role in ensuring healthy soil, clean water, and resilient farms. South Australian dairy farmers are committed to sustainability, and enhancing biodiversity supports long-term environmental and economic success.

The South Australian Dairy Industry Action Plan 2024-2029 highlights the importance of sustainability and biodiversity in reinforcing the state's reputation for high-quality dairy production. The plan emphasises the need to protect and enhance the natural environment while ensuring dairy farming remains economically viable.

Why is Biodiversity Important?

Biodiversity initiatives provide numerous benefits to South Australian dairy farms, including:

  • Improved Environmental Health – Restoring native vegetation enhances soil health, increases water retention, and supports pollinators.
  • Sustainable Dairy Production – Healthier ecosystems lead to more resilient and productive farms.

The Biodiversity Act

The South Australian Government has passed its first-ever Biodiversity Act, marking a major milestone in protecting native plants, animals, and ecosystems — while also helping to address the impacts of climate change.
